Wasini Marine Park

Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve is one of Kenya’s most spectacular marine conservation areas, located in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Shimoni in Kwale County. Established in 1978, the park was created to protect one of the country’s richest marine ecosystems and to promote sustainable tourism and conservation.
The area is famous for its vibrant coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, tropical fish, and migratory whales. It is often described as the “home of dolphins”, making it a top destination for snorkeling, scuba diving, and marine safaris.
Comprising the Kisite Marine Park (28 km²) and the Mpunguti Marine Reserve (11 km²), this protected area offers visitors a chance to experience the beauty of Kenya’s coastal biodiversity while supporting community-based conservation efforts. The park is jointly managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and local communities, ensuring that both nature and people benefit from its resources.

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve is located off the southern coast of Kenya, near Wasini Island and about 8 km offshore from Shimoni village in Kwale County. It is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and is often referred to as “the home of dolphins.”
